Located in the highlands north of Ubud, Bali, Sebatu is renowned for its sacred water temples, serene natural surroundings, and deeply rooted spiritual traditions. Its history has been preserved mainly through ancestral oral stories and ancient Balinese manuscripts, as written records are limited. According to the tradition of Bhuwana Tatwa Maha Rsi Markandya, the village is connected to the spiritual journey of Maha Rsi Markandya in the 8th century, during which early settlements and sacred sites were established across the Gianyar region.
The identity of Sebatu is further reflected in ancient religious elements, such as lingga relics, unique ceremonial practices, and early temples that originally did not include Padmasana shrines, highlighting its status as one of Bali’s earliest and most adaptive villages.
The name “Sebatu” is believed to originate from the legend of Mayadanawa recorded in Lontar Usana Bali, evolving over time from “Sauh Batu.” Shaped by migration, natural events, and the influence of the Gianyar kingdom, the village developed a strong philosophy of harmony between humans, nature, and spirituality.
Today, daily life continues to reflect Balinese values through farming, rituals, community cooperation, and mindful living, offering visitors an authentic cultural experience rooted in history, tradition, and a tranquil village way of life.
